Our Barrels Get a Second Life with Great Divide’s Newest Yeti Release
The Many Lives of a Barrel
In order to call whiskey a Bourbon it must meet specific requirements set forth by The Federal Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits. One of those requirements states Bourbon must be aged in a brand new, charred oak barrel. This means, unlike Scotch or Irish whisky, we can never reuse a barrel and call it Bourbon. We can only use a barrel once, but that doesn’t mean that a barrel’s life is over once we are done with it. A barrel’s flavor can continue over several lifespans and have many uses. Many of our used barrels go out to our friends in the brewing community and are used to make those flavor packed barrel aged beers.
Win The Yeti’s Barrel Bar!
We are excited to announce our most recent partnership with our friends over at Great Divide Brewing Co. on their newest Laws Whiskey House Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout. To celebrate this release, we have found another great way to showcase just what you can do with a used whiskey barrel. We are giving away not one but two, barrel bars made from the barrels used to age this year’s Yeti release. One runner up will receive a YETI Tundra 45 cooler. Enter to win the Yeti’s Bar here!
LAWS WHISKEY HOUSE AND GREAT DIVIDE GO WAY BACK
It is a little-known fact that Great Divide grabbed our first 12 used barrels for a barrel-finishing project back in the winter of 2014. That is why we were really excited about creating the Laws Barred Aged Yeti Imperial Stout with our ex-bourbon barrels. It’s amazing to be able to trace flavors in our whiskey to this beer. “We are thrilled to be working with Laws Whiskey House for our 2022 Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout release,” said Great Divide Founder and President, Brian Dunn. “Laws is local, our two businesses are independent and like-minded, and they are a great producer of whiskey. Their recently emptied, high-quality barrels lead to a perfectly nuanced Barrel Aged Yeti. It’s been a wonderful partnership and it shows in the beer.”
ABOUT THIS YETI RELEASE
Aged for 12 months, Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout has been a mainstay in the Great Divide
portfolio since as far back as 2010. This is the first year, however, the Denver brewery has
called out a specific barrel partner. In celebration of the Great American Beer Festival, Laws Barrel Aged Yeti Imperial Stout will start hitting shelves and tap handles this week. GABF attendees can sample this release at the brewery’s booth.
We love seeing our barrels have a second life after we’ve made whiskey with them. It’s great being a small part of another Denver-based company’s creative work making bold, high-quality and flavorful products. We hope you enjoy this special partnership as much as we do and thanks for coming along on our journey.
