Worth the Wait: Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey Is 5 Years Old
We are very pleased to announce the second Bottled in Bond offering of our Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey. Meeting all the high standards of the Bottled in Bond Act, this seasonal limited release is timed for early fall when the barley crop will be ready for harvest in the San Luis Valley of Colorado.
This Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey exemplifies our ongoing commitment to deconstructing our Four Grain Bourbon into each of its four individual grain expressions. This malt whiskey is unique because it’s made with barley varieties that history nearly left behind. In fact, the heirloom two-row barley varietal we use as our base malts was literally saved from extinction. While commercial farmers found it too low yield, Wayne Cody of the Cody family farm and Colorado Malting Company found its unstripped flavor too good to let go. Today, Wayne and his sons continue to grow this barley for us in a field alongside Henry Road, our whiskey’s namesake.
The mash bill for this second release of our Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey is comprised of 100% malted barley. This includes a combination of malted heirloom two-row barley, a Munich malt punched up with some toasted Abbey and honey specialty malts all of which originate from the Cody family farm.
Like everything we make at Laws Whiskey House, our Henry Road Straight Malt Whiskey is made in traditional sour mash style. Additionally, this whiskey is cooked, fermented, and distilled on-grain in a departure from typical malt whiskey distilling techniques. Our atypical process imparts a signature nuttiness to the distillate, which we then accentuate with layered complexity from the barrel. This year’s release of Henry Road Straight Malt is comprised of 8 barrels aged 5 years in new 53-gallon, #3 char American white oak. These 8 barrels were filled in the summer on 2016 and after 5 years of maturation yielded just under 2,400 750ml bottles this year.
This is a distinctive whiskey. We find it to be candy-like, with flavors of sweet peanut brittle, hazelnuts, and a walnut depth. There are also solid apple-ly fruit notes with a background of melon rind, and seagrass.
- AROMAS: Apple blossom, honey and toasted oats
- FLAVORS: Green apple, sugar cookie, seagrass and sweet pipe tobacco
- FINISH: Medium body, drying and lingering on the palate
At Laws Whiskey House, we believe that the soul of whiskey is comprised of the people who grow it, the people who make it, and the people who drink. And good whiskey, like a good story, is meant to be shared. We hope you enjoy this special whiskey as much as we do and thanks for coming along our journey.
