As the Official Whiskey of the University of Colorado Athletics, Laws Whiskey House is thrilled to expand its partnership with the release of its newest expression—Black and Gold Select Straight Bourbon Whiskey. “The first whiskey we created in partnership with University of Colorado Athletics, Ralphie’s Reserve, was about introducing Laws to Buffs fans with a sweeter, more approachable whiskey that’s great in cocktails,” says Al Laws, Founder and President of Laws Whiskey House. “Our new Black and Gold release takes it a step further—a limited-edition, 5-barrel blend designed for the discerning whiskey enthusiast. This bold, high-proof whiskey is crafted from barrels aged between four and nine years, offering a more complex and refined sipping experience.”
A COLLABORATIVE BARREL SELECTION WITH RICK GEORGE
The journey to create Black and Gold Select started when University of Colorado Athletics Director Rick George joined us in the Laws Whiskey House Barrel Warehouse to help build this special blend. Rick worked alongside Al Laws and our head blender, James Kunz, to talk through the tasting notes of our finest barrels, all representing the depth and richness of Colorado whiskey.
As part of the process, we discussed Rick’s preferences, what he looks for in a whiskey and the whiskeys he enjoys. Guided by his input, we selected barrels that captured the essence of what this release should be—bold, complex, and deeply flavorful. Each barrel, aged between four and nine years, brought its own unique character, resulting in a blend that showcases the very best of what Laws Whiskey House has to offer.
ABOUT THIS WHISKEY
The Black and Gold Select is released at 110 proof, the barrel entry proof our whiskey goes into the barrel to age. This decision was intentional, allowing the bold grain-forward flavors to shine while maintaining balance. The use of heirloom Colorado-grown grains is a signature of Laws Whiskey House, and in this expression, the flavors from the barrel harmonize with the earthy, rich quality of the grains.
